Animation on the big screen
Animated cartoon series are the ones scooping big amounts of cash from the public pockets. Their success is unimaginable huge, the latest success could be the Dark Knight which turned out to be one of the best movies that ever could be made, irrespective of the theme which is completely different from a movie like Titanic, the gross income it received form ticket sales crossed Titanic and made it the best film at number one – at least till the time it was released, I don’t know if it has changed after that.
The other thing about animation is that since the characters are fictional, there can be a lot of franchising of toys – unlike compared to a movie like inception – you can’t really make toys and sell them to kids – but for Batman which was actually a comic book first, DC can easily make loads of money selling Batman action figures. With the release of the Dark Knight, kids aside, I’m pretty sure the grown ups were also buying toys for themselves telling the sales assistants that their looking for the Batman action figure for their son.
Cinema is making loads of money from animation turned films as they are previously comic books or series which already have a large fan base. If a movie is released on a particular comic character, the already existing fan base will automatically go to watch it plus a large number of causal movie audience who are open to viewing any kind of film. All this is = BIG BUCKS. Like hair loss treatments, the falling quality of English spoken cinema could be reversed by releasing Dark Knight like films to revive their earnings.
